Setting up iTunes and DVD Player for digital surround sound

To play back movies that contain a digital surround sound encoded audio to your computer using the DVD-player or ITunes. You will need to connect the Mac to the following home theater receiver:

1 TOSLINK (optical digital audio) cable connected to your Mac, which has an optical digital audio port, which is as follows:
2 TOSLINK (optical digital audio) cable with a mini-TOSLINK connector or a mini-TOSLINK adapter to connect to a 3.5 mm optical digital audio output jack (for use with portable Mac) of the HDMI-cable (for model Mac Mini, which uses HDMI). Installing ITunes for playback of content in surround sound

Movies purchased or leased from ITunes Store frequently both stereo audio and digital surround sound tracks. By default, your Mac will play back stereo audio tracks. If you want to experience digital surround sound, you need to connect a Mac to a home theater receiver via TOSLINK (optical digital audio cable).

In Itunes, click the "speech bubble" icon to view a variety of audio choices, for example, "English (Surround)". If the surround sound option is not available or if the icon is not displayed, make sure you use the equipment and content that is encoded with digital surround sound.

Creating a DVD-player to output surround sound

You can easily adjust the output on your computer for surround sound equipment with the application DVD-player. Open DVD-player (from your application, or by inserting a disc the film), then choose Preferences from the menu, DVD-player. Click the "Configure Disk" icon and change the sound of your surround speakers:

Make sure that you only have one application to play trying to use a digital surround sound (open) at the same time.

Adjust the sound device in System Preferences

Make sure that the audio output Mac, configured to use a digital connection to the panel, the audio output preferences, especially if the installation does not work weekends, using the DVD-player and / or if you frequently change the sound settings out. To access the settings:

   1. With the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
2. On the View menu, select a sound.
 3. Click on the panel display.

For example, if you hear only the sound plays through the built-in speakers, you will need to change your power settings surround the device. If you use ITunes to play Dolby Digital content, it can output sound through the surround sound speakers automatically.

You can also adjust the balance control and the overall volume level of the output sound preference panel system.

If you notice that some speakers play a big part of the surround sound balance control may need to be adjusted to the center position. LFE (or subwoofer) can not always play audio when other speakers have done, this is normal because this speaker is designed only to reproduce low frequency sounds, which may not always work.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter a particular media, which in your opinion, surround encoded, but it does not play in surround sound, consider connecting compatible surround sound receiver between the Mac and speaker hardware (with the appropriate digital output) to avoid the decoding of questions .
Additional information

Background

Digital surround sound is the result of multi-channel digital audio, and data compression technologies such as Dolby Digital, which lets you use more than one channel audio output through a single connection. Not all music and video content is encoded with surround sound, when it is produced. Examples of content that is often encoded with surround sound are DVD-ROMs and movies purchased or rented from Itunes. When the music and movies are not encoded with surround sound, their sound will play as a regular two-channel stereo instead.

A common method of digital surround sound is to use a 5.1-channel home theater receiver to decode multi-channel audio surround sound. There are many versions of digital surround sound, but most of them based on the five channels (or columns) surround sound setup. It consists of left and right front speaker, left and right surround (rear) speaker, and LFE (or subwoofer) speaker.

The use of surround sound with professional applications Apple,

To learn more about the use of surround sound with professional audio to Apple applications such as Logic Pro and Soundtrack Pro, see this article.

Using a TOSLINK cable

TOSLINK (optical digital audio) cable is used for digital audio connection between your Mac and surround sound (or third-party audio devices). Cables use the orientation that only allows them to be properly inserted into one side of your Mac, or other audio device. A small, protective cover is used on many models Mac, which have a Toslink port to dust. Simply pressing the cable into the port slowly automatically open the protective cover and allows the cable correctly.

Tip: You may have to remove the plastic protective cover from the end of the cable before using it. In some cases, the cable may not display properly inserted into the optical digital audio port (even though inserted with correct orientation) to a small plastic shield is removed from the end of the cable. It is recommended that you use a protective coating, if the cable is not connected actively to prevent the ingress of dust (or damage) at the end of the cable.
